Comments: John Tyler Matthews married Amanda A.
Johnson on Feb 3, 1878 in Howell County, MO.
We have a very, very poor picture of John Tyler Matthews. The picture was taken after he had become bedfast and stayed in bed for over 40 years. The picture we think was taken when he was in the County Farm Rest Home otherwise known as the poor folks home, maybe about 1941. The pole above his bed was what he used to pull himself up with. Just to give a little history about him his children did not like him very much. When he died no one claimed his body and he was buried in the cemetery at the county farm. Brenda Tengelin and Edith Krumholz went to the cemetery but there were hardly any grave markers and they could not find his grave. |
In the story of the County Poor Farm where it tells about
John Tyler, part of it says: "John T. Matthews, who lived at the
farm from 1922 to 1936, signed an affidavit overriding his relatives
wishes to claim his body when he died, electing to buried at the farm,
near his friends." (They left out the word "To") I think
it should have read, electing to be buried at the farm,. I have an org.
of his obit. It reads: JOHN MATTHEWS, BEDFAST FOR FORTY YEARS, DIES John Matthews, 85, paralytic invalid, died yesterday morning at 1:30 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Nora White at 608 Maple avenue, where he had been cared for during the last few months. Mr. Matthews, who in earlier years was a well known farmer of the Old Bly district in the south part of the county, had been bedfast the last forty years. He was for many years at the County Welfare Home, and, despite his affliction, was always on unusually cheerful person He is said to have relatives living in Arkansas, but messages sent to them brought no response. He was buried at the Welfare Home yesterday, the Hal Thornburghs of the Thornburgh funeral home being in charge of burial arrangements. That is it word for word and letter for letter. Someone laminated the obit. for Mamma, so it is in fair shape. |
